- Torsen / Crown Gear (Longitudinal Engines): Found in vehicles with front-to-back engine layouts like the Audi A4, A6, A8, Q5, and Q7. This is a mechanical, full-time AWD system that continuously splits power between the front and rear axles.
Technical Insight: Haldex systems feature an electric pre-charge pump that forces hydraulic fluid against clutch plates. Over time, friction material creates a thick slurry that clogs the tiny pump strainer screen, burning out the pump and turning your AWD vehicle into a Front-Wheel Drive car without throwing a dashboard light!
